Inspiring children to love reading is a part of why I decided to become a media specialist. I have been an avid reader my whole life and have loved the feeling of being able to “escape into a good book”. As a classroom teacher I have always made sure my classroom libraries are stocked full of a variety of books to cater to my student’s interests. Our class trips to the Media Center have always been a special time for us to find books that make us happy and look forward to spending time reading. As I began my School Library Media degree, I learned more about finding books to read to my students during read-aloud times. Students will develop a love for reading when they are able to relate to the characters and stories being told. The course FREC 7232, which focused on children’s literature, and the Scholastic Reading Summit conference changed my mindset on how I choose books for my read-alouds. As a classroom teacher and a media specialist it is important to include books about people from all over the world who experience the real world issues that we are facing as a society. Our collections whether they are in the classroom or in the media center should be a haven of information for inquiring minds.
FRIT 7734: Reading Enrichment Unit
Reflection:
The Reading Enrichment Unit focuses on elements 2.1, 2.2, and 2.4. Overall I think the lessons went great. Mrs. Garcia’s students loved coming to the library and getting to work on such an engaging activity. The students were so excited to use the iPads and record themselves share their own thinking. When we started the recording process, we had trouble getting the students access to the record option due to needing to sign in Google or Microsoft. To finish the lesson, I worked with a small group of 5 students at a time to complete their recording of their dot drawing. Some of the student’s videos are hard to hear due to them speaking too softly and the noise of the library being too loud. I did not realize the videos would pick up so much background noise with those soft speakers. Having a rubric next to the devices would have helped the students remember to explain why they decided to draw their picture.
